Use a marker pen to write the target graphemes on your pegs, remembering to make a few copies of each grapheme so that children have lots of word options.
You will also need to print our word list from the Synthetic Phonics Toolkit. You can download the word list for Series 1, Unit 1 here.
Instructions:
Choose a word from the word list.
Sound out each phoneme in the word and ask the child to find the pegs with the correct graphemes to represent each phoneme.
As you go, peg the graphemes onto the dinosaur in the correct order, to spell the word.
To celebrate, we have an Easter colouring in sheet for you. From everyone here at Get Reading Right, we hope you have a happy Easter and enjoy the upcoming break!
Phonics activities like this card, provide the perfect opportunity for a more subtle reminder. While those little hands are colouring, you are reinforcing the phonemes that the children have already started to learn.
This activity is designed to be used in pairs or groups. The instructions below are written for one pair. You will need to increase the amount of copies depending on how many pairs you have.
Laminate your cards if you wish to use it as a repeated activity.
Instructions:
Divide the class into pairs or small groups.
Give each pair a stack of cards and a bucket of laundry pegs.
Place the cards in a pile on the floor between the pair.
Taking turns, each child must recognise the picture on the card e.g. “mop”, then spell the word, filling in the blank with one of the grapheme options on the right side of the card.
Have the child clip a peg on the correct grapheme.
Continue this until the pile is finished.
This is about teamwork as much as it is phonics, so make sure that the pair are talking to one another and working to find the answer together
Photocopy back to back (one card per child) and hand out
Write a list of desired camera words on the whiteboard
Instruct the students to read each of the camera words on the whiteboard, choosing his or her favourites to write on the necktie on the inside of the card
Have the students colour in the card
Then instruct them to carefully cut around the outside of the card and fold the card in half along the centre line
