Resources: 9 Word and Sentence Record Sheet (pg 245-258) 9 Child Word and Sentence Sheet (pg 245-258) What To Do: 1. Give the child the Child Word and Sentence Sheet for the unit you are assessing, the adult should have the corresponding Word and Sentence Record Sheet ready to record the child’s responses. 2. Ask the child to read the words on the sheet, as this is an assessment, do not help the child if they get stuck, but encourage them to move onto the next word. 3. Repeat for all the sentences. 4. Tick the words and sentences that are read correctly and record in the targeted teaching box any words that cause difficulty. Assessment 2: Word and Sentence Reading and Spelling Word and Sentence Spelling Assessment Purpose: To assess the spelling of the target phonemes using decodable words and sentences. Resources: 9 Word and Sentence Record Sheet (pg 245-258) 9 Paper and a pencil for the child to write responses What to do: 1. Give the child the paper and pencil, tell him/her that you are going to read some words and sentences and they should write these down on their paper. 2. Read each of the words and sentences on the Word and Sentence Record Sheet for the unit you are assessing (omitting the nonsense words) and mark them correct/ incorrect. 3. As this is an assessment do not correct the child’s words or sentences but give lots of praise as they are writing. 4. Record any words that the child got wrong in the targeted teaching box. Nonsense Words: Nonsense words are also included to ensure children are accurately decoding and not guessing from memory. You will see that some of the representations used can make two or more phonemes. For example, ow in unit 4 can represent the phoneme /ow/ as in cow or /ow/ as in snow. With real words there will be only one acceptable answer whereas with nonsense words you should accept either phoneme.
